This book was a lot like the waves at a beach。 A lot of ups and down。 I found myself both struggling to pick it up at some parts but also unable to put it down in others。

Not sure why, but to me, this book was the first in the series to present a set of believable characters。Perhaps this happens because we have more standard humans, of a sort, and less of Primarch demi-gods。I have nothing against demi-gods, and the image intended for the primarchs, it just does not match having an superhuman behaving like a spoiled child。In this book we do not have such things。 Just a bunch of soldiers, or super soldiers, that know they are lost and they just stand by each other。 Not sure why, but to me, this book was the first in the series to present a set of believable characters。Perhaps this happens because we have more standard humans, of a sort, and less of Primarch demi-gods。I have nothing against demi-gods, and the image intended for the primarchs, it just does not match having an superhuman behaving like a spoiled child。In this book we do not have such things。 Just a bunch of soldiers, or super soldiers, that know they are lost and they just stand by each other。 That is something we can believe in。Other than that, we get also a glimpse of he choices made by the Emperor。。。 What we knew and what he needed to do, even knowing what he did。 It somehow diminishes the idea of a megalomaniac。 。。。more

In many way this is one of the finest books of The Horus Heresy I've read。 Much like Dan Abnett's Legion this is a starkly different offering, looking at events from a much more local set of characters and a very diverse cast, from the 'Dirty (just over half) Dozen' style Crusader Host members to the Custodes, a Pariah and, of course, the astropaths。This is a unique and heavily character driven story with real heart that, after a slow (in a good way IMO) start keeps you hooked。No review of this In many way this is one of the finest books of The Horus Heresy I've read。 Much like Dan Abnett's Legion this is a starkly different offering, looking at events from a much more local set of characters and a very diverse cast, from the 'Dirty (just over half) Dozen' style Crusader Host members to the Custodes, a Pariah and, of course, the astropaths。This is a unique and heavily character driven story with real heart that, after a slow (in a good way IMO) start keeps you hooked。No review of this book is complete though without mentioning it's big problem (and why it only gets 4 stars)。 It's impossible。 The calendar of events in this book just don't tally up and they are so messed up it really stretches things。 There have been attempts since to 'explain' or 'excuse' this but you just can't。 Throughout the book, Terra is aware of the start of the Heresy and reports are starting to come in of Isstvan V。 Then Magnus calls home。。。。。 except Magnus called up months or even years ago, as when he's calling he's trying to warn his father of Horus' imminent betrayal (See 'A Thousand Sons' and many other books)。 This timeline screw up just doesn't make any sense at all。 。。。more

This is the first time I've read anything by Graham McNeil that I actively disliked。That's not to say there's nothing to like; a lot of the scenes are very good。 It's undeniably interesting to see the Imperium through the eyes of an Astropath。 Kai makes a very bad first impression but he grew on me as I came to understand his trauma。 However, I don't know why most of these scenes are here。 Seeing Terra's initial reaction to the news of the Dropsite Massacre, for example, is appropriately chillin This is the first time I've read anything by Graham McNeil that I actively disliked。That's not to say there's nothing to like; a lot of the scenes are very good。 It's undeniably interesting to see the Imperium through the eyes of an Astropath。 Kai makes a very bad first impression but he grew on me as I came to understand his trauma。 However, I don't know why most of these scenes are here。 Seeing Terra's initial reaction to the news of the Dropsite Massacre, for example, is appropriately chilling; but what does it have to do with any of the characters introduced in this book? ("Great scene! Why did you write it?")There are three prologue sections。 THREE OF THEM。 The main plot doesn't begin until halfway through the book; what the heck is with this pacing? Ostensibly the story is about Kai Zulane learning a grave secret that could tip the balance in the heresy, and running through Terra's criminal underworld。 Problem is he doesn't even learn the secret in question and get locked up for it until halfway through the book! I get that you need to be introduced to the people he trusts, but we spend way too long on these scenes。 。。。more

I don't have a lot to say about this entry - it was good, but didn't blow me away。 It explores some interesting, less-explored groups from the setting, but perhaps spends too much time "ramping up" to have enough room to explore those groups in a totally satisfying way。In general, these sort of "side stories" within the greater Heresy are intriguing, and add (necessary!) color and context to the greater story, but are rarely as engaging as the main groups and conflicts。 I don't have a lot to say about this entry - it was good, but didn't blow me away。 It explores some interesting, less-explored groups from the setting, but perhaps spends too much time "ramping up" to have enough room to explore those groups in a totally satisfying way。In general, these sort of "side stories" within the greater Heresy are intriguing, and add (necessary!) color and context to the greater story, but are rarely as engaging as the main groups and conflicts。 。。。more

The Outcast Dead takes place on Terra and has a very unique focus。 There are no wars, not glorious conquests and precious few battles, instead the book focuses on Astropaths, more specifically on a single Astropath who survives after the ship he is own gets invaded by demons and then, after getting back to the Astropath City, stumbles upon the most important secret in the Galaxy which everyone around him wants。This is a very atypical Warhammer book for a variety of reasons。 First of all, its mai The Outcast Dead takes place on Terra and has a very unique focus。 There are no wars, not glorious conquests and precious few battles, instead the book focuses on Astropaths, more specifically on a single Astropath who survives after the ship he is own gets invaded by demons and then, after getting back to the Astropath City, stumbles upon the most important secret in the Galaxy which everyone around him wants。This is a very atypical Warhammer book for a variety of reasons。 First of all, its main characters are Astropaths (and a Navigator), not the usual Space Marines/Primarchs of most other Horus Heresy novels。 Second of all, this is much more story and character focus, with very few action scenes。 This leads to a slower book (the main conflict of the book doesn't arise until around halfway through) but on the other hand helps it to build the main character into a believable person, with visible growth throughout。 However, this focus on the story and the lore comes with the caveat that the book takes a series of Major liberties with the established canon and timeline of events。 This wasn't a big issue for me personally because once I understood that I just ignored the "bigger picture" and just focused on the story contained within these pages。 But I can see why it would be a dealbreaker for others。 In the same vein, there are several details which are unexplained and underdeveloped。 Overall I'd say that this was a strange read。 A very atypical 40k book with a strong human protagonist let down by some very confusing canon conflicts and a ton of underdeveloped context。 。。。more

This book was a hot mess。 Read out of context, by which I mean, without having read any of the other HH books, it's enjoyable。 There's several instances of internal logic failing, but the overall journey is fun。 I don't know how much of that was Keeble's narration, however。In context, as the 17th book in a series of established timeline and events, it's a disaster。 The high notes of the story make sense, but all of the groundwork and threads that tie the plot together don't。 There are many mista This book was a hot mess。 Read out of context, by which I mean, without having read any of the other HH books, it's enjoyable。 There's several instances of internal logic failing, but the overall journey is fun。 I don't know how much of that was Keeble's narration, however。In context, as the 17th book in a series of established timeline and events, it's a disaster。 The high notes of the story make sense, but all of the groundwork and threads that tie the plot together don't。 There are many mistakes with the established timeline, and those mistakes are what this story is built on, so there aren't many easy fixes to be had。It's no Battle for the Abyss, but it's not much better。 。。。more

This book was okay for the most part。 There were some cool scenes and some of the fights were pretty awesome, especially the ones involving the World Eaters, but overall I feel like this book was almost pointless。 Except for a couple of sentences towards the end that had some weight and meaning it was totally unnecessary。 To say anything more would be spoiler-ish so I won't delve too deep into why I didn't like it and I gotta tell you that I think it says a lot that the first Warhammer book that This book was okay for the most part。 There were some cool scenes and some of the fights were pretty awesome, especially the ones involving the World Eaters, but overall I feel like this book was almost pointless。 Except for a couple of sentences towards the end that had some weight and meaning it was totally unnecessary。 To say anything more would be spoiler-ish so I won't delve too deep into why I didn't like it and I gotta tell you that I think it says a lot that the first Warhammer book that didn't knock my socks off is seventeen deep into this particular series not to mention the other trilogies I've read。 I dunno, this book might have made a better prologue somewhere else because it definitely didn't need to be a full-length novel to tell the story。 Bummer。 。。。more

This novel features one of the most passive, inactive, unmotivated, unlikable, uninteresting protagonists to ever grace the pages of a narrative。 The world building in this book is decent, but most of it is hyperbole without actual substance。 Untold power, unimaginable horror, indescribably glory。。。 you get lots of platitudes like that in the descriptive text, making you wonder what the author is there for。 Worse still, however, is the sad state of character development in this book。 It's a sham This novel features one of the most passive, inactive, unmotivated, unlikable, uninteresting protagonists to ever grace the pages of a narrative。 The world building in this book is decent, but most of it is hyperbole without actual substance。 Untold power, unimaginable horror, indescribably glory。。。 you get lots of platitudes like that in the descriptive text, making you wonder what the author is there for。 Worse still, however, is the sad state of character development in this book。 It's a shame that none of the characters ever come to life in an interesting way that would make the readers care about them in a meaningful way。 。。。more

This book tries to tell two stories at the same time。 One is about the reaction of Dorn to the events of Istvaan V told through the lens of those carrying the messages。 The other is about the personal lives of those messengers。 One of those stories is interesting and the other receives all of the attention from the book。 I tried to muddle my way through for the occasional moment important to the greater story but it couldn’t hold my interest。

When "The outcast dead" started I didn't think I'd like this book that much。 I am not that familiar with looking at the outbreak of Horus' betrayal from the perspective of the Navigators and the Astra Telepathica。 The story follows Kai Zulane who is an astropath。 Kai was aboard the Argos when it was caught up in a warp storm and he was the only survivor。 This is happening in the shadow of the first reports coming in to Terra about Horus' treachery。 Lord Dorn has sent several Legions to Istvaan t When "The outcast dead" started I didn't think I'd like this book that much。 I am not that familiar with looking at the outbreak of Horus' betrayal from the perspective of the Navigators and the Astra Telepathica。 The story follows Kai Zulane who is an astropath。 Kai was aboard the Argos when it was caught up in a warp storm and he was the only survivor。 This is happening in the shadow of the first reports coming in to Terra about Horus' treachery。 Lord Dorn has sent several Legions to Istvaan to reign in Horus and bring him to justice。 Little do they know that several of the Legions are Horus' fellow traitors。In the meanwhile, it turns out that Kai might hold a terrible secret knowledge and now everyone wants what is in his head。 Escaping Imperial custody with a group of Astartes who belong to "traitor" Legions。 Sadly these Astartes had been on Terra for decades and their parent Legion's choice have them branded as traitors as well。 Thus accompanied by a Thousand Son, 3 World Eaters and one of the Emperor's Children-they take a trip down into Terra's underworld and run into a blast from the past- renegade Thunder Warriors。More than this I will not say。 The book starts out slowly and Kai is not a likable character。 in fact, almost none of the Imperials are sympathetic。 It is the "traitor" Marines who actually have personalities。 The fight between them and the Thunder Warriors (impressive how powerful the old Thunder Warriors were) and then them versus the Custodes was awesome! The World Eater who calmly, whilst still behind bars, declares "I will tear out your spine from your chest" and then later does it! To a Custodes, of all things was truly impressive。 But it is in all the subtle "hidden" information where this book really shines。 Now, finally, I realize why the Emperor was so infuriated with Magnus trying to warn him via the Warp。 Not only did the Webway project get severely damaged, but many millions died-including many Astropaths who would have been vital during the Heresy when their services could have been considerable。The story starts slow, but really picks up in the middle and the ending is quite interesting。 。。。more

This book was ok, but there were so many plot lines to follow, sometimes it felt like this book was searching for a one true story to tell and it couldn't make up it's mind。It was interesting to see the role the Emperor himself played in the events of the Heresy unfolding and how the psychic abilities and the Warp remain the underlying causes, bringing Magus's actions even more into focus。An ok book, a necessity for continuing the series, but could have been better。 This book was ok, but there were so many plot lines to follow, sometimes it felt like this book was searching for a one true story to tell and it couldn't make up it's mind。It was interesting to see the role the Emperor himself played in the events of the Heresy unfolding and how the psychic abilities and the Warp remain the underlying causes, bringing Magus's actions even more into focus。An ok book, a necessity for continuing the series, but could have been better。 。。。more

As always this is the rating for licensed fiction so if you're not a fan of 40k then don't take this for a recommendation。But as far as the Horus Heresy novels are concerned, this is among the best。 The book covers the effects of the Heresy on the Astra Telepathica, so we get to go back to Terra for a little bit and away from Legion Ships and assaults on enemy planets。 But that's not to say it's dull。 The first half is slow but it's essential for the story and the second half more than makes up As always this is the rating for licensed fiction so if you're not a fan of 40k then don't take this for a recommendation。But as far as the Horus Heresy novels are concerned, this is among the best。 The book covers the effects of the Heresy on the Astra Telepathica, so we get to go back to Terra for a little bit and away from Legion Ships and assaults on enemy planets。 But that's not to say it's dull。 The first half is slow but it's essential for the story and the second half more than makes up for it。 。。。more
